This seems to be a classic case of "if everybody hates you, you must be doing something right." Not only are supporters of gay rights and gay marriage livid at the selection of Rick Warren for the Invocation at the Inauguration - especially following on Warren's role in supporting the odious Prop 8 - but so, apparently, are pro-lifers.
My state's Senator, Bob Corker, came up with a union-busting alternative to the auto bailout. Negotiations over the alternative, which actually had some decent provisions regarding bondholders, collapsed tonight. The sticking point was the timing of UAW wage cuts; Corker wanted 2010 and the UAW (and Dodd) wanted 2011 when the contract runs out.
After final provisional and absentee ballots were counted, Barack Obama has officially won Salt Lake County, Utah! This is the first time Salt Lake County has voted for a Democratic Presidential candidate since 1964.
According to an internal poll released to Marc Ambinder, Obama trails McCain by only five points in South Dakota.
Obama actually gained a point since early October. He leads by 9 points now in a PPP poll recently out.
Obama only trails white voters by 53-42, which is a tiny margin for a "Southern" state with a sizable non-white population. Also, Obama leads among Independents by 9 and does better among Democrats than McCain does among Republicans.
Here in Tennessee we had our first chance to vote for President today. I live in the historically Republican eastern part of the state, though we Democrats are growing in number. I went into the Blount County Courthouse in downtown Maryville this morning and cast my vote for Barack Obama.
I don't know if this has been diaried yet but another poll has come out this evening showing Obama taking a sizable lead against John McCain.
The other day I linked to a Rasmussen poll showing only 28% of Americans supporting the bailout plan. With 35% undecided it seemed that the American people could be influenced to oppose the plan in greater numbers.
We've seen the experts come out against the bailout plan, including both progressives and conservatives. Both Presidential candidates have voiced opposition to central components of the bailout plan. And an anecdotal survey of a town in Northern Virginia shows resentment against a plan that benefits those who don't deserve help.
It's quite instructive to hear both candidates respond to the financial crisis on Wall Street this morning.
It's pretty clear that the McCain campaign is keeping Sarah Palin in seclusion from the media. They are banking on voters seeing this as a boring "process" story. And they have calculated - probably correctly - that a gaffe in the next few days would be far worse than keeping her sequestered.
It's looking increasingly like the VP pick will be Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty. Romney seems to be despondently out. Ridge and Lieberman are not likely given their positions on abortion. Huckabee has never been a serious contender.
